This series of paintings gathered under the title La Invención del Nuevo Mundo (The Invention of the New World) invests the iconography that the Conquista inspired. They emerge from the re-appropriation of a specific production of images. Paramount to my work is any iconographic corpus which is semantically charged, constituting a vivid or vague collective memory, a nation’s imaginary, a class’s aesthetic or a society’s ideology. Reinterpretations may question the way images have created stereotypes, as well as imposed beliefs or shaped unconscious. One could agree that there are no new images, they just keep on repeating themselves over and over, but with tiny variations within which symptoms slip out. Painting back the missing stories deals with our modernity and its resurgent concern for the question of identity.
